I am Jenika Scott, and alongside Dr. Prince Solomon, we spearheaded the MCC Field Action Program to empower the Irular tribal communities in Tamil Nadu, India. This initiative was established in 2015 by Madras Christian College to address the multifaceted challenges faced by the Irular tribes. These challenges include historical marginalization, limited access to education, land displacement, economic vulnerability, and health disparities.
Our primary objectives were to improve Irular livelihoods, conduct needs assessments, build capacity, advocate for rights, and implement sustainable solutions. We employed a qualitative approach involving focus groups, community mapping, and photo-voice to gain comprehensive insights into the Irular communities’ challenges and opportunities.
Our community interventions focused on addressing basic needs and empowering the Irular people. We improved shelter by distributing tarpaulins, ensured water access with reliable water tanks, supported education through school enrollment, advocated for land rights, and raised awareness on crucial issues such as health and resource utilization.
The tangible outcomes of our efforts included improved housing, water access, education, land rights, and community awareness. Looking forward, we aim to expand education programs, strengthen healthcare access, promote economic development, and implement a comprehensive program evaluation to measure impact. These initiatives will help us address systemic issues and work towards the sustained empowerment of the Irular communities.
